Makeup Essentials

Happy Monday everyone!

I have to admit I’m in a blog/outfit slump. I blame it on the long hours of work and lack of sleep, but every time I sit down to write a post I can’t seem to organize my thoughts and narrow in on what exactly I want to write about. And the same goes when trying to plan out outfit posts. I can’t seem to figure out what I want to post and what I want to feature. But, of course I also feel as if I need “this jacket” and “this pair of jeans” and “these shoes” in order to post a decent outfit or else I just shouldn’t post anything at all. Sounds crazy? Sounds dramatic? Welcome to the wonderful world of my thoughts…which is currently a crazy jumbled mess.

Today I wanted to share my love of makeup. I didn’t start using makeup until the summer before my sophomore year of college when I fell in love with watching beauty videos on YouTube….and actually started my own channel (*insert monkey emoji covering eyes*). I haven’t posted a video is such a long time and if I’m being entirely honest I really do miss it and hopefully will have some new content up soon. But, in the meantime I wanted to take to my blog and share what I’m currently using and what my holy grail makeup essentials are.
Base
Since I have oily skin, I always start off with a primer. The Smashbox one is my current favorite because it helps treat acne scars and discoloration over time. I’m not a massive fan of liquid foundation. I’ve only ever fallen in love with two…a Covergirl one which has since been discontinued and the Hello Flawless by Benefit Cosmetics. It seriously goes on so smooth and provides amazing coverage without feeling heavy. And the only thing I use to apply it is my Beauty Blender. I once thought it was absurd to spend $20 on a sponge, but honestly it’s so worth it.
I recently discovered the Trish McEvoy instant eye lift and I don’t know how I ever lived without it. It helps hide dark undereye circles and it blends in so easily. I’ve used the Bare Minerals loose foundation since I started using makeup and I swear by it. I don’t use liquid foundation all the time, but I always use my Bare Minerals powder either by itself or over the liquid foundation. I seriously swear by it. And I swear by my two favorite face brushes. Sigma has the best affordable brushes and I love the quality of Sephora, although it’s a bit pricer.

Sculpt
It’s taken a lot of trial and error to perfect my everyday look. I used to be scared of makeup and would steer clear of color, in other words blush and especially bronzer. But, I found that the most important thing with makeup is to create dimension and depth. I always use my Hoola brozer (which is evident in the photo below, since I hit pan) to contour my face and give some color. I’m also obsessed with Benefit Cosmetics blush and have made it my mission to collect them all, but my current favorites are a rose gold based one and a multicolored peach/rose/plum/pink one.
But, I always go back to my Nars orgasm blush. It’s one of my all time favorites and was actually the first blush I ever purchased. And to finish off, I always use a highlighter and my current favorites are liquid based one. Sun Beam which is the tan sister of High Beam and Girl Meets Pearl which is a great natural highlighter than can be worn on the weekends without makeup!

Eyes
I’m almost always running late or rushing in the morning, so I don’t have time to create an amazing eye shadow look, but emphasizing my eyes is probably the most important step of my makeup routine. The one thing I wear everyday is a gel eyeliner on my top lid (not pictured), my favorite pencil eye liner worn on my waterline. And mascara on my top and bottom lashes to open up my eyes.
I may not always have time to create a full look, but I always make sure to blend a darker color in my crease and a bright white or neutral color in my inner corner to help me look more awake. I’m a massive sucker for eyeshadow palettes, so much so that I own every Urban Decay naked palette. My current favorites are my MAC palette, which oddly enough is still not filled, my Lorac Pro and the Naked Basics. Worn over the UD eyeshadow primer.

Finishing Touches
Since I have naturally oily skin, I’m always looking for the best finishing products to really lock in the product. One of my favorites is the Urban Decay de-slick finishing spray. I’ve been using this stuff since I started using makeup, but stopped using it for a while…because I was too lazy to buy a new one. But, ever since using it again I don’t know how I lived without it. It helps seal in your makeup and also helps make your makeup look natural so you don’t look too powdery or like you have too much product on.
I’ve also recently started using the Trish McEvoy finishing powder and I honestly swear by it. It’s a translucent powder that I use when I finish applying my makeup and I carry it with me everywhere I go to touch up my t-zone. It seriously helps combat my oily skin and helps me look matte and fresh. And since I always finish off my look with lipstick, I use my Dior lip balm beforehand. This is my second jar of it and I can’t get enough. I love the scent and it seriously keeps my lips super smooth.

Lips
I have a confession to make….I am obsessed with lip products. I seriously have way too many products in every shade and every type…gloss, pen, stick…you name it, I’ve probably tried it or have it. From drugstore to high-end I have a ridiculous amount of products. My current favorites are my Bobbi Brown lipstick and lipliner duo that seriously lasts all day. And staying on the high-end spectrum, I love the YSL lipsticks. They are so pigmented and creamy.
As for drugstores I swear by the Revlon lip butters. I pretty much have every shade and I constantly preach to everyone how amazing they are at such affordable prices.

    Great post!! It doesn't always have to be outfits. I think the start of a new season can be a bit overwhelming. I know the UPS guy thinks I probably have a serious problem! Ha!

  • I have been finding myself in a similar slump as well! However, these make-up essentials are great! So many fantastic lip colors! XO

  • You mentioned you had really oily skin. Mine is terrible, melt of my face even in the dead of winter oily. After trying pretty much everything they sell, someone suggested Revlon color stay. My skin is so wrecked from my teenage years that I have to wear liquid foundation for that full coverage effect. I apply it over a primer, with a damp beauty sponge and it's amazing! Lasts 9+ hours at work, and it's so light I has never caked up. Just a suggestion if you're feeling adventurous. (;

    Keep the makeup posts coming!

  • These are all such great picks. I use a lot of the same, and I am right there with you with the oily skin! I have had a lot of luck with nyx shine killer as a primer too. Makes my face look perfecly matte for hours on end.

  • Mel I couldn't agree more! Seriously Benefit products are my WEAKNESS! And I don't know how I ever lived without the UD finishing spray, seriously makes such a big difference!!

  • HAHA!! Yes!! The start of the new season is so overwhelming and I just want to get rid of all my current clothes and bring all new ones in. When I was in college and didn't have easy access to a mall, I would place so many online orders, the mailroom people would make fun of me haha. Can't wait to see how you style your new pieces and what new pieces you got!! And thanks for the encouragement girl!

  • Oh thank you so much Alex!! I seriously used to know nothing about makeup. I would walk into Sephora and walk right out because I was overwhelmed and had no idea what I was doing. It takes some practice and some pretty hilarious trial and error haha, but with some youtube videos and time I've fallen in love with makeup!! Thanks again girl!

  • I blame the change of seasons!! I just want to get rid of all of my clothes and bring in new ones haha! But thanks so much Anna! I have such a weakness for lip colors!!

  • Oily skin is the worst!!! I mean I'm oily like 5 minutes after I apply my makeup….like what?! I've actually heard great things about the Revlon color stay, but have yet to try it for some reason. But, I've been more into purchasing makeup than clothes lately so I might jus have to try it!! Thanks for the suggestion. And have you used a Clarisonic? Such an investment, but so worth it. I mean seriously my skin used to be so bad because I just picked and picked at it, but the clarisonic seems to help……but, girl your skin looks flawless in blog pictures!!!

  • Thank you so much Taylor!! I've actually heard great things about the Nyx primer and I'm actually dying to try it, but it's so hard to find Nyx products in NYC, which sucks because I love the price point and the quality of the products I have tried. Thank you so much for the suggestion, definitely going to check it out!

  • Ah thank you so much Shannon!! The UD base is AMAZING and all of they're products are seriously so addicting. I love MAC and my goal is to finally complete my palette haha because it's been about two years with a half empty palette. Have a great rest of the week girl!

    Will be going out and buying all the products you recommend… but I love this post! More please! 🙂

  • Now I want 90% of your makeup bag! Thank you for writing this post, it's very useful. Since I have oily skin too I will that primer too!

  • Revlon Color stay is SUPER inexpensive. If you apply it with your beauty blender you will love it. Over a primer that works for you, it should give a nice finish. Plus they have a ton of shades. I used to be into the Clarisonic, but after a while I sort of stopped and started using basic exfoliating cleanser . I didn't see drastic changes and the exfoliates are much cheaper. haha. Clarisonic was almost too harsh for me. I'd be red for about 24 hours. My favorite exfoliating cleansers are the St. Ives, and Boots ones. (: I swear my skin looks that good from Revlon Color Stay. I use it every single day. Less on the weekends for a more natural look. (;

  • Um your makeup collection is impressive! Make-up is not my strong suit so I love reading/seeing what other people are using. Great post!
