After such a stressful week at work last week, I had the most relaxing and best weekend. My mom & I spent Saturday shopping together at the mall and running a few errands. Honestly, most weekdays I feel like I’m running on autopilot and always rushing so it was a nice change of pace.
On Sunday, I stayed in and worked on this week’s blog posts and started planning content for next month. Honestly, since 2018 started, I’ve had such a new outlook about my blog and I’ve truly been enjoying every minute of it.
WHAT IS A TICKLER?
Okay, honestly I had to google this to see if it was an actual thing or something my director at work made up. Turns out, it’s an actual thing. The definition of a tickler is “a device for jogging the memory, specifically a file that serves as a reminder.”
As part of my yearly review at work, I have to review myself. What have I done & contributed to the team? What are some strengths I’ve shown this past year? And some weaknesses?
After my first yearly review at work, my director recommended I start a tickler. She basically said, we do so much within a year and when it comes time to review it or think about it, we draw a blank. So a tickler, will be a document where every time you do something great, you jot it down. That way, when next year’s review rolls around you have a whole document of your wins.
WHY IT’S BEEN HELPFUL IN MY LIFE
I mentioned in my 2018 New Year’s Goals post that this year I want to be my own cheerleader. And frankly, I think we should all be our own cheerleaders and number one fans.
Starting a tickler at work has been a game changer for me.
I try to make a note about every win big or small. Whether I took initiative to start a project and complete it or if I was curious and learned something new, I jotted it down. It’s nice to know that when reviews roll around again, I won’t have to try to think back on a whole year of work to figure out what I’ve done.
But, more than that, anytime I have a particularly stressful week or get down on myself, I open it up to remind myself of everything I’ve accomplished. This helps me to remain positive and remind myself that it’s just a bad day not a bad job and I’ll get through it.
And because it’s made such a positive impact in my professional life, I started to apply that to my blog life and my personal life.
I’m someone who focuses on major moments and the final destination so writing down every win I have big or small has been helping me to appreciate the journey. To be honest, I’m proud of myself for posting 3 days last week and for finally creating and sticking to an editorial calendar. And I’m looking forward to the end of the year to see everything I’ve accomplished.
WHY YOU SHOULD START A TICKLER
I read somewhere that when we’re upset, that’s all we remember, is everything we have to be upset about. And when we’re happy, that’s all we remember, is all of the good moments in our life.
We all have bad days. We could even have a full bad week. I’m someone who struggles with depression so I’m constantly fighting to focus on the positive and keep out the negative.
So whether you prefer to handwrite it in a journal or planner or keep a word document on your desktop, I think it’s nice to have a document of all your wins big or small. So when you have those bad days or weeks, you can look back and remember all the positive.
Maybe you’re always late, but on Wednesday you were on time. (Me) That’s a win! Maybe you were running late, but caught that train or didn’t hit bad traffic, that’a win. Or maybe like me, you had a great bonding day with your mom on Saturday. That’s a win.
Once we start celebrating every little win and remembering everything we have to be grateful about, those things that irritate us and ruin our day, just don’t seem so big anymore.
Okay don’t laugh, but I’ve been obsessed with RuPaul’s Drag Race and he always ends the show by saying, “If you can’t love yourself, then how in the hell you gonna love somebody else?” And I love that and think it’s so true. If we can’t be our own fans and celebrate ourselves then how can we expect anyone else too? I’m all about focusing on the positive and celebrating myself in 2018 so I hope you’ll join me by starting a tickler of your own!
Thank you so much for reading and I hope you enjoyed today’s tickler post! Have a great week everyone!
