After an amazing weekend, I am more than ready to take on this week. I was craving Thai food hardcore all last week, so on Friday I finally treated myself to some pad thai. Then on Saturday, my mom, Eddie, Kenny & I headed out to wander around Soho & Chinatown. We used to spend every weekend exploring downtown Manhattan, but haven’t been in forever so it was nice getting out again. And the weather was perfect! Plus my mom and I started going back to the gym this weekend and it felt great to work out again. Normally, I’m a big homebody and couch potato on the weekends so it was nice being active and getting out.
How was your weekend?
Today, I wanted to talk about success. I feel like, the idea of being successful is sometimes thought of as this big, impossible thing. But, what I’ve come to realize is that, being successful doesn’t mean having a million dollars or having hundreds of thousands of followers on Instagram, it can mean anything you want it to be. Last week, I managed a busy week at work and still managed to put up three posts on the blog and I felt pretty successful. Success, to me, isn’t one big thing, it’s multiple steps you take everyday. So today, I’m sharing 5 things to do to be successful.
Things to do to be Successful:
MAKE A LIST
Any list. A to-do list. A completed list. A grocery list. Just make a list.
I know for me personally, I love making to-do lists, at work and for my blog. There is nothing more satisfying than checking off your list and seeing everything you’ve accomplished thus far. It helps me remember everything I have to do and it helps me be more productive. There are so many times where I feel like all these thoughts and ideas and tasks are swimming around in my head and it gets overwhelming so I can easily talk myself out of doing anything and everything. So when I write things down, I can clearly see what needs to be done and what I want to do so that I don’t get overwhelmed and just end up quitting altogether.
TAKE ONE STEP TOWARDS YOUR GOAL
I love coming up with projects. I always feel like I have 101 ideas, but to actually start something? Not my strong suit.
Again, I always overwhelm myself and I always tell myself that I need to do all this research or do xyz before I can even start something. And yep, you guessed it, I end up doing nothing because I make excuses like oh I don’t have time or oh I need to do this first. But, one thing that has really helped me, is to stop making excuses and do something, anything at all, just doing something.
It doesn’t matter if it is the smallest thing, jut taking that one step will really inspire and motivate you to keep going. Even when I’m tired and kind of unmotivated with my blog, I’ve been pushing myself to do something, even if that’s making a list of what I want to get done or a list of ideas or organizing photos, I’ve been just trying to do something. So whatever your goals or dreams are, stop making excuses and just take one small step every day towards it.
Ask questions and make an effort to learn something new every day.
I think so often we are scared of looking dumb in front of others so we keep our mouths closed if we don’t know something. Or we make something out to be so complicated so we don’t even try to learn about it. But, we should be asking questions and trying to learn because that’s how we grow, personally and professionally.
I’ve been at my corporate job for two years now and I really consider myself an expert in my job. And I owe that to me opening my mouth and asking questions, even if they seem dumb. Even now, I always ask questions even if they don’t pertain to my job just because I want to learn and grow. I ask questions about my coworkers’ roles and responsibilities because it helps me understand the big picture of how things get done and it helps me see if there is any way that I can support them better.
Your curiosity on something so random today could really help you down the line when you least expect it. So even if it’s something as small as googling what a word means, be curious, ask questions and set out to learn one new thing every day.
A CLEAR PHONE MAKES FOR A CLEAR MIND
It seems so stupid, but we really are a generation that is so attached to our phones and so they play a big part in our lives. It’s so easy to ignore a text or not delete your emails or go through your notifications and before you know it, you open up your home screen and the little number hovering over your mail says 732 and on your texts it says 12 and Facebook says 5 and you have all these notifications!
I know for me personally, I always feel like I don’t have my life together if I don’t go through my emails and read the important stuff and delete the rest. So take 5 to 10 minutes everyday and just go through your phone and get rid of all the notifications and clutter. It’s the easiest and smallest thing you can do to make you feel like you have your life together.
TAKE TIME FOR YOURSELF
I think so often we think that in order to be successful, we have to constantly be working and going. But, instead, that’s the easiest way to get burnt out. Constantly going and going and putting pressure on yourself actually isn’t that productive.
I used to think that I had to go to work all day, come home and immediately get to work on my blog until it was time to go to bed. I wouldn’t give myself time to do anything for me so I started resenting my work and not really wanting to work at all when I got home. I realized that I was much more productive when I came home, took some time to self care by doing my night time skincare routine, watch a Youtube video or 3o minutes of a movie while I ate dinner, get some work done and read before bed. For me, I’m much more productive when I make time to work, but still make time for a leisurely activity.
And if you need a break, take a break. Slow and steady wins the race. Take the time to take a step back, breath, focus on yourself and come back refreshed and inspired and motivated.
Thank you so much for reading! I hope you feel inspired and motivated to take some small steps toward success and towards your goals. If you have ideas of things to do to be successful, I would love to hear.
