I had a bit of stomach bug yesterday and decided to stay home and rest up rather than brave it out in the cold. So needless to say, I’m feeling relaxed and ready to get back to work. Especially since it’s now a super short week for me.
This week, I’m trying to pull back the curtains and share more of my day to day life. On Monday, I shared what I actually wear to work since I dress my outfits up a little more for the blog. And today, I’m sharing a day in the life of…me. Pretty much what a typical work day is like for me, balancing my full time job and my little blog.
I’ve been really liking these kinds of blog posts and YouTube videos and I’m hoping to start it as a new series with guest posts from people I know in my personal life.
A DAY IN THE LIFE OF
6:00am – Wake up and literally roll myself out of bed and hope I don’t fall. Stumble to the bathroom with my eyes closed and hope I don’t walk into anything.
6:00am – 6:30am – I brush my teeth and then jump in the shower. This is usually done with my eyes closed because it’s just too early in the morning. And yes, I take a long time in the shower. Always have. Always will. Dana was my suite mate for one year in college and can totally vouch that I take forever to get ready.
6:30am – I finally emerge from the shower. Throw on my silk robe that is currently green and matches my desk chair. I have a pretty set routine once I’m out of the shower. I grab my glasses so I can finally see and then switch them out for my contacts. Then I spray It’s a 10 in my hair and grab my wet brush. Then I blow dry my hair which takes very little effort because my hair is pretty low maintenance. I really just flip my hair over and blast the blow dryer to it and hope for the best. And then finally I do my morning skincare routine, which if you missed it, I wrote a whole post on my morning and night skincare and makeup routine.
7:00am – And I’m finally out the door, heading to my first train which takes me into Manhattan.
7:10am – I live relatively close to the train so it’s a pretty quick walk. Honestly, it depends on the day, but my train could be a disaster and dealing with delays and then it gets overcrowded, etc. It’s a big part of my anxiety if we’re being real so I have to leave early to be prepared for what’s in store for me that day.
7:30am – 7:45am – Again, it depends on what kind of day the train is having but I’m normally into Manhattan by 7:30 am. Its a 15-20 minute train ride into the city and then I head to my second train which takes me uptown. While I’m on my second train, I put in a Starbucks mobile order for my mom and I. It’s the same every morning: venti green tea lemonade for me and venti unsweetened hot green tea for her. The first time I used mobile order, it was a disaster and I hated it and Kacie tried to convince me it was the best and now I totally believe her. It really is great.
7:45am – 8:00am – If it’s a good commute day and we are running on time or even early, my mom and I sit in starbucks for about 15 minutes and just relax from the commute and scroll though Instagram and just chat before we get our day started.
8:00am – My mom works literally right next door to me, which is why we commute together. It depends on her schedule for the week, but at 8 am she heads to work and I head upstairs to my job
8:00am – 8:20am – I socialize with my coworkers when I first get in. Normally everyone is running around during the day so it’s nice to take a few moments in the morning before the crazy kicks in to catch up.
8:20am-9:00am – At this point, I head to my sample closet which has a big mirror and privacy and you may have noticed I haven’t done my makeup yet. I’m normally rushing to get out the door in the morning and in the past when I would do my makeup at home, I was almost always late so I figured it was better to get me to work early and let me do my makeup there. So I normally play a youtube video, a podcast or music while I do my makeup. It’s nice to just sit and relax and gather my thoughts before the day starts.
9:00am – 9:30am – After I apply my makeup, I open up the sample closet for the day, wash my hands since there may be product on it and then sit down to read my work emails while I drink my tea.
9:30am – 10:30am – If it’s Monday, I head to our weekly team meeting. We talk about any pressing topics and then we go around to talk about any deadlines for the week, challenges we forsee and our overall schedule to see if we need support and to make everyone aware of what’s going on in our world.
10:30am – 12:00pm – Every day is different for me so it’s hard for me to map out my actual work day. Some days I may have meetings and other days I’m just trying to check tasks off my to do list. I wrote a post about my job here if you want to hear more about what I do. But, my main responsibilities are sorting and managing samples for at least two seasons, preparing shoots and working with stylists and production, working with our retouching team and pretty much being the all knowing sample guru.
12:00pm – 12:30pm – I don’t normally eat breakfast. Yeah, yeah, most important meal and all that, but I just never find myself eating breakfast during the work week, so I get hungry pretty early. I normally have lunch with my work wife, Anna and we catch up on our day so far and just chat. Honestly, we could have a full in depth therapy session with each other or just laugh about stupid stuff. You just never know, but she keeps me sane! I also use this time to do any small blog work I can fit in if it’s not that busy.
12:30pm – 5:00pm – Just working… again see this post here if you’re curious about my job!
5:00pm – My boss and most of my team normally heads out at around 5:00pm depending on what kind of day it is. I’m normally rushing around during the day so I take this time to go through my emails again to see if there is anything I need to follow up on and note it in my planner so I know what needs to be done tomorrow and what is still pending.
5:00pm – 7:00pm – It depends on how busy the day or week is, but I normally stay till 6:30 or 7:00pm. I normally do like miscellaneous tasks or last minute work given to me during this time because the work place is quieter and I can focus. Plus, my mom normally gets out around 6:00pm so I just wait for her so we can commute home together.
7:00pm – Finally out of the door and heading to my first train home.
7:15pm – 7:30ish: Depending on how my first train is running, I then get on my second train home. I normally put in my airpods and sleep since I’m tired from the day and to also relax before I do some blog work at home.
7:45pm or 8pm – I’m finally home! I’ve been trying to get into the habit of hanging my coat up right away and putting my clothes away so it doesn’t pile up throughout the week. I then grab my iPad and put on something to watch, currently The Real Housewives of NYC and then take off my makeup and do my nighttime skincare routine. You can check this post out for my nighttime skincare routine.
8:20pm – After my extensive skincare routine to take the day off, my mom and I normally heat up leftovers or whip up something real quick for dinner. Depending on what we’re eating, I’ll normally sit on the couch and eat then go to my desk like if it’s soup or if it’s like rice then I’ll sit on my desk and eat while I work.
8:30pm – 10:30pm – I try to work on my blog while watching the The Real Housewives of NYC. I could be working on a new blog post, editing photos, updating my editorial calendar, responding to comments, catching up on my favorite blogs and commenting on them, making to do lists, etc.
10:30pm – 10:45pm – I try to get into bed early but it just depends on the day and how tired I am and how much blog work I’m trying to get done. I aim for 10pm, but most of the time its 10:30-11. I start getting ready for bed by brushing my teeth and applying my lip mask since my skincare routine is already done.
10:45pm – I’m *hopefully* in bed reading my book with my book light. I’m currently reading Dumplin’. This really helps me to relax and unwind at the night. But, the worst is when the book is so good that I don’t want to put it down and I keep fighting off sleep!
11:00pm – 11:30pm – Again, it depends on how tired I am but, I fall asleep around this time-frame. Any later and I’m pretty much dead in the morning. And then I get up in the morning to do it all over again.
I hoped you enjoyed a little peek into a day in the life of me. I am in no way a master at balancing work and my blog and some weeks I’m a bit more disorganized and hectic and tired than others. But, this is my current routine and what’s been working for me so far.
Thank you so much for reading and I hope you have a great rest of the week!
